Missing the last train out of Kolkata can throw you in a tricky situation. Howrah station is one of the most active stations in India but there is a gap of almost 5 hours between the first train and the last one. While you might get tempted to spend the night sitting on the metal sofas and play Clash of Clan on mobile, this is surely not a comfortable idea. Thankfully, there are some decent hotels in Kolkata just outside the Howrah station. While expecting bellboys would be a fancy idea, some of those are rather comfortable hotels to pass the night. Let me take you to those places which might not even cover by travel sites.
1. Hotel Shivam: This is probably the closest of all hotels and you need to walk for 5-7 minutes to find accommodation in its 66 rooms. It has all the basic amenities like telephone, TV, AC and private bathroom, etc. There is laundry, doctor on call, car rental services which you might want to note. If you ever want to stay longer, the hotel also offers river cruise of Ganga, sightseeing tours of Kolkata and secretarial services. There is a multi-cuisine restaurant in the hotel to fill your stomach and yes, the invaluable Wi-Fi service is available on all room for free.
2. Hotel Manish: If you are willing to walk for 10 minutes, you can find this rather decent hotel for your night. 70 spacious rooms and the balcony facing the famed Howrah Bridge with cool Ganga air to wash your face; this hotel has all the needed amenities like telephone, AC, TV and Wi-Fi. You will also get bottled drinking water and attached bathroom. If you feel hungry, you can always use the restaurant and I have heard good feedback about this restaurant. However, you need to step out or go in your room to smoke. For a longer stay, they will arrange for car rentals, guided tour of the city and travel agents, if you need any. They have a 24X7 desk service, room service and their staffs are multilingual, so freely speak Hindi or English with them.
3. Hotel Sita: This is one of the best hotels in Kolkata near Howrah station, according to the reviews on Yatra and what I have heard. Still, it is the smallest hotel I would review here as well with just 20 rooms to offer to the guests. This is around 1 km from Howrah station and each room has the basic amenities like TV, AC, wardrobe, bottled drinking water and you can order for services like laundry, room assistance and medical assistance. The bathroom is equipped with hot and cold running water and you also get a writing desk in every room. The hotel has a fully capable backup power system which is a relief during the summers of Kolkata where power cut is a frequent thing. It also has a garden in front, a rarity in this location due to the cramped space.
4. Hotel Saket: This hotel I included because the often budget is a constraint for all of us. However, this hotel doesn’t lack much and it is close to the Howrah station as well. There are 48 rooms to choose from across four floors. Each room is equipped with TV, AC, wardrobe and attached bathroom which has hot and cold running water as well. You can also order for basic services like laundry, medical assistance and car rental from the hotel. This hotel has a banquet hall and a multi-cuisine restaurant. The hotel has a backup power system in case any power cut hits it.
Always remember, the right side of Howrah station leads you to Howrah Bridge and you need to walk at least three kms in that direction to find anything. All these hotels are on the left side of the station, if you get out directly or even by the subways. Technically, these hotels are in Howrah, not Kolkata. And you can easily do hotel booking in Kolkata at Yatra. Another thing, as most of these hotels are strategically located to cater to the people who need short term accommodation to use Howrah Station, these are not as cheap as it might get in Central Kolkata. But, after missing the train at 11.30, you wouldn’t want to take a taxi to central Kolkata to look for a hotel.
