The mountains are considered sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, India is home to the highest mountain range of the Himalayas which is also home to world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. Here’s the list of the seven most prominent mountains of India with ranges, peaks, summits, hills and sub-ranges.

हिमालय – The Himalayas

The Himalayas mountain range of India is home to many of world’s highest peaks including Earth’s highest peaks – Mount Everest. The Himalayas range is home to over 50 great mountains with 7,200 m (23,600 ft) in elevation and considered sacred in Hinduism.

अरावली – Aravalli Range

Aravalli mountain range is the oldest range of India, starting near Delhi and ending in Gujarat while passing through Haryana and Rajasthan. The Aravalli Range is source of many Indian rivers, has several forest and home to list of leopard wildlife corridors. Highest peak of Aravalli Range is Guru Shikhar in Mount Abu at 1,722 metres (5,650 ft).

विन्ध्याचल – Vindhya Range

The Vindhya Range or Vindhyachal chain of mountains and ridges is actually a discontinuous mountain range in the geological sense. Vindhyachal meet the Satpura Range in the Maikal Hills near Amarkantak and the highest point of the Vindhyachal is Goodwill Peak at 2,467 feet.

सतपुड़ा – Satpura Range

The Satpura range of hills is parallel to the Vindhya Range to north and end in Amarkantak, from where Narmada River originates. Satpura meets Vindhya at Amarkantak and heavily forested area also famous for numerous tiger reserves like Kanha, Pench, Satpura and Pachmarhi. Highest point of the Satpura range is Dhupgarh an elevation of 1,352 metres (4,429 ft) in Pachmarhi.

पश्चिमी घाट/ सह्याद्री – Western Ghats

Western Ghats is also known as Sahyadri mountain range that runs parallel to the coast and sometimes called the Great Escarpment of India. The Sahyadri range is one of the world’s 8 hottest hot-spots of biological diversity and home to many undiscovered species of wild animals found in India. Hhighest peak of the Western Ghats is Anamudi peak at an elevation of 2,695 metres (8,842 ft) in Kerala.

पूर्वी घाट के पर्वत – Eastern Ghat

The discontinuous range of great mountains of Eastern Ghats run parallel to the Bay of Bengal from the state of Odisha through Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, meet the Western Ghats at Nilgiri mountains in Tamil Nadu. Jindhagada peak is the highest mountain peak of Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh and Deomali peak in Koraput is the highest mountain peak of Odisha.

पूर्वांचल – Purvanchal Range

The Purvanchal range is actually a sub-mountain range of the great Himalayas in north eastern India, cover the seven sister states and also home to popular Patkai hill rang, Garo, Khasi and Jaintia hills, Naga Hills and Phawngpui Blue Mountain of Mizoram.

Shillong Plateau in Meghalaya state connects with the Purvanchal Patkai – Range, part of the Meghalaya subtropical forests ecoregion and one of the most species-rich areas in India. Mawsynram and Cherrapunji are the wettest place on earth, and the ecoregion is home to most unique species of wildlife in India.

  • Kanchenjunga

Kangchenjunga mountain lies between Nepal and Sikkim in India, Is the third highest mountain in the world and highest mountain peak in India (8,586 m). The Kangchenjunga section contains five peaks between 7,903 m to 8,586 m and comprises protected areas such as Khangchendzonga National Park – A first Mixed Heritage site of India.

  • Nanda Devi

Nanda Devi is the highest point of the Himalayas that is located entirely in India, Second second highest mountain after Kangchenjunga. The peak and surrounding circle of high mountains are part of the Nanda Devi National Park in Uttarakhand and home to very rare Himalayan mammals such as Himalayan musk deer, Himalayan black bear and Himalayan tahr.

  • Anamudi Peak

Anamudi mountain peak is the highest peak of the Western Ghats and also in South India, at an elevation of 2,695 metres (8,842 ft). The peak is a prominent peaks in South India, also known as Everest of South India – As highest point in India out of the Himalayas.

  • Nilgiri Mountains

Nilgiri Mountains and hills are part of the great Western Ghats in Southern India, Home to 24 mountain summits with 2,637 metres (8,652 ft) tall peaks. Doddabetta is the highest peak of Nilgiri Hills, also part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve – A fascinating ecosystem in South India for wildlife.

  • Pir Panjal Range

Pir Panjal Range is part of the Inner Himalayan region that run across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. It is the largest range of the Lesser Himalayas and the mountain pass connects the Kashmir Valley also home to longest railway tunnel of India – Pir Panjal Railway Tunnel – 11.215 kilometres.

  • Anaimalai Hills

Anaimalai Hills or Elephant Mountains are part of the Southern the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu and a popular trekking destination in the Western Ghats.The Hills are famous for elephants wildlife sanctuary and also known for coffee and tea plantations.

  • Cardamom Hills

Cardamom Hills supports pepper and coffee plantations and home to 10 tallest mountain peaks of Kerala. Eravikulam National Park is part of the Cardamom Hills and Anamudi is the highest point in South India followed by Meesapulimala, Kattumala and Devimala.
