Gateway Casinos and Entertainment has branches in communities all across Canada, and each branch is involved in supporting charities in its local community. All told, Gateway supports a staggering 1000 charities and non-profits across Canada.
In 2016, Grand Villa Burnaby made $90,000 in donations to organizations including the Burnaby Hospice Society and the Burnaby Firefighter Charitable Society. In the same year, Gateway’s Cascades Casino Resort in Langley donated an incredible $106,000 to charities and non-profits including the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Langley Christmas Bureau/Food Bank.
The charitable arm of Gateway Casinos is a program called GatewayGIVES, and organizations can apply to receive donations on the casino’s website.
It’s not just traditional, brick-and-mortar casinos that support charitable organizations. Online casinos also value the communities in which they operate. Online sports betting and casino gaming operator GVC Holdings gives employees two days out of office in which to volunteer at organizations like homeless shelters and children’s orphanages.
GVC also makes substantial contributions to GambleAware, an organization in the United Kingdom dedicated to providing services that combat problem gambling and gambling addiction. GambleAware regards gambling addiction as a public health problem and treats it accordingly, with strategies aimed at the general populace, at-risk groups, and affected individuals.
Of the £9.6 million donated to GambleAware for 2018/2019, GVC Holdings PLC contributed £1,462,000.
The Hard Rock Cafe and Casino has donated millions of dollars to a variety of causes including disaster relief, autism awareness, human trafficking, and cancer prevention since it opened in 1971.
The Hard Rock Heals Foundation was established in 2016 to focus on music philanthropy, giving to organizations that believe in the healing power of music. The Foundation will donate $250,000 to grant recipients in 2019.
Clarion Gaming, known for organizing ICE London, has a strong focus on supporting the community. At ICE 2018, Clarion launched a partnership with Children’s Happiness Involves People (CHIPS) to focus on providing electric wheelchairs for disabled children.
CHIPS was founded on behalf of the charity-focused UK gaming industry. Thanks to donations from Clarion Gaming and other industry players, CHIPS has raised over £2.2 million and provided more than 520 custom electric wheelchairs to disabled children.
Chairman James Packer announced in 2014 that Crown Resorts, along with the Packer Family Foundation, would be donating a combined $200 million over the next ten years through the National Philanthropic Fund. The fund was established to focus on Indigenous education, Australian culture, and the arts. Crown Resorts and the Packer Family Foundation are each contributing $100 million in a multi-year commitment.
