In the Indian automobile market the success of the small cars has prompted many car makers to launch compact sedan cars. A sub-4 m compact sedan can be competitively priced as the there are tax exemptions. For the last couple of years many compact sedans and cross-overs have appeared in the Indian market. The compact sedans Tata Zest and the Hyundai Xcent has variants priced between Rupees 3 to 5 lakh.
The Tata Zest unveiled during the 2014 auto expo was launched on 12th August 2014. There are 5 diesel and 4 petrol variants for the Zest priced between Rupees 4.64 and 6.99 lakh ex-showrooms. The petrol variant Zest XE is priced Rupees 4.85 lakh.
The features at the front include the stretched headlamps, chrome strips bordering the plastic grille giving it a glossy look, an integrated body coloured bumper internally operated ORVMs, wrap around type LED tail lights surrounded by chrome strips and excessive chrome on the boot lid around the logo. The black and beige interior of the Zest is done in quality plastic. The cabin features of the XE variant include an engine immobiliser, central locking with key, child lock facility, a manual AC, power steering, fabric seats and power windows at the front.
The Zest XE petrol is powered by 1.2 L, 89 bhp engines with economy, city and sports drive modes. In the sports mode engines give maximum torque. The mileages are 17.6 kmpl. The 3995 mm long Zest has a wheel base of 2470 mm and a ground clearance of 175 mm.
The Hyundai Xcent has 7 petrol and 5 diesel variants. The Xcent Base 1.2 variant is priced Rupees 4.96 lakh. The Hyundai Xcent built with the ‘fluidic philosophy’ has features like the hexagonal grille and air dam, the sweptback head lamps, the wraparound type clear lens tail lamps with chrome inserts and the body coloured bumpers. The Xcent comes in colours of pristine blue, phantom black, twilight blue, red passion, pure white and sleek silver.
The cabin of the Xcent Base has features like fabric seats, a manual AC, an engine immobiliser, child lock and central locking facilities and internally adjustable ORVMs. The Xcent petrol variants are powered by a 1.2 dual VTVT engine with 1197 cc volume, 81 bhp and 114 NM torque giving mileages of 19.2 kmpl.
The 3995 mm long Hyundai Xcent has a wheel base of 2425 mm and a ground clearance of 165 mm. The suspensions are McPherson strut at the front and the torsion beam axle at the back. The tyres are 165/65-R14 tubeless type and the brakes are disc type at the front and drum type at the rear.
