7 Wild Animals of The Great Thar Desert of India

India has unmatched and large variety of flora and fauna across the whole country, from the wet grasslands to freeze Iceland and from deep water ocean to hot sand ocean. Thar, the great Indian desert also called as the ocean of sand is home of many species of birds, reptiles and wild animals. The various desert animals and plants are adapted to survive in adverse climatic conditions.The animals of the great thar desert include numerous species of reptile, desert scorpions, mongoose, red fox, chinkara and falcons. Indian Bustard, Blackbuck and wild cat are few species which are fast vanishing in other parts of India but can be spotted here. The ship of desert, Camels is the first animal come to mind while talking about wildlife safari in desert. There are eleven national parks in the Thar desert area of India, the largest of which are the Nara desert wildlife sanctuary and the Rann of Kutch. The Rann of Kutch is the only protect area for the Indian Wild Ass, one of the most endangered species of India.

A small lizard known as Indian spiny tailed lizard can be found crouching in the sand of Thar desert. The Spiny-tailed lizard is a vulnerable species which exists only in Thar desert in India. There are about 23 species of lizard found in great desert of India few of them are scaber,Gecko and the Monitor Lizard. The monitor lizard is one of biggest lizard found in desert area of Rajasthan.

There are 25 species of snakes that can be found in the Thar desert of Rajasthan. Among the snakes the saw scaled viper, the large rat snake,black cobra and sand boa are the most famous and dangerous snakes of the Thar desert. The desert snakes are hide very easily in sand to protect by hunt and to hunt the lizards and insects.

The Indian desert eagles is one of the biggest flying predator and endangered species found in Thar desert area of Rajasthan. These harrier’s are the one of the major attraction of Thar desert National Park of Rajasthan. The desert eagles is a dark and majestic birds with long wings,prey species of birds include partridges,doves,Spurfowl and some time snakes as well. The other types of wild harrier’s are Indian vultures,falcons and buzzard.

The great Indian bustard is the among the heaviest of the flying birds found in India.There are four members of the bustard family are found in India, which are falls under the protected species. The large numbers of giant Indian bustard are found only in ocean of sands, Thar desert. The region is a haven for other 141 species of migratory and resident birds,which includes Indian Eagles, spurfowl and peacock “The National bird of India”.

The black buck is a species of antelope found mainly in India, and one of the most common antelope of Thar region. Another desert antelopes includes The Indian gazelle, also known as chinkara. Like most wild animals, the Black buck is also protected by wildlife of India.

The desert cat or the caracal is found all across the desert of Rajasthan. The caracal is small in size compare to other wild felines. The Thar desert “The ocean of sands” provides habitat for Indian wild cats, they predator to rodents, rabbits and lizards.

White Footed Fox

The desert fox is a small fox covered with red, so also called as red fox. The Bengal Fox or Indian fox is most common animal found in Thar desert. The wolf can also spotted in Thar while hunting Birds such as the sand grouse, partridges and shrike.

Chinkara

Chinkara or Indian gazelle live in arid plains and desert land of India. Thar Desert has the largest population of Indian chinkara estimated at 100,000 with 80,000.

Indian Desert Jird

Indian Desert Jird found mainly in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan and Gujarat. They are closely related to gerbils but not found in pure sand dunes. Other wild animals of Thar Desert also includes Indian Wild Ass and Dromedary Camel.
