Ken Gharial Sanctuary is the second best place to see gharial in India after National Chambal Sanctuary and part of the Gharial Conservation where captive gharial breeding take place. The sanctuary is protected under Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and located northeast of the Khajuraho temples.

Gharial is one of the three species of crocodilian found in India and also among the longest of all living crocodilians. The fish-eating crocodile only found in the rivers of northern part of the Indian subcontinent including Chambal river, Son river, Ken river and Mahanadi river.
