7 Largest Sugarcane Producing States in India

Sugarcane is among the top cash crops in India and contributes to India’s GDP also a great source of income for farmers in the country. Major sugarcane producing states of India are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka.


In the year 2023, Maharashtra again became the largest producing sugarcane state of India, favourable climate and cooperative sugar mills in the regions like Kolhapur, Sangli, and Solapur are major sugarcane-producing districts.

Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is the second leading sugarcane producing state in India, The fertile land of the river Ganges and Yamuna are very much suitable for the crop.


Karnataka is the third largest producer of sugarcane in India, The other major sugarcane-producing districts of the states are Belgaum, Bagalkot, and Mandya.


Ahmedabad, Bharuch, Surat, and Vadodara are top produing regions of sugarcane in Gujarat, Scientists of Gujarat have developed a new variety of early maturing, strong sugarcane.

Tamil Nadu

The state of Tamil Nadu has a favourable climate for sugarcane cultivation in South India, Also there are new cane variety developed jointly by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.


The plains of Ganga river in the state of Bihar offers fertile land for sugarcane productivity and the state is one of the leading state in sugarcane producing along with lichi, mango and banana.

Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is also one of the top sugarcane producing states in South India.The most favourable climate and fertile land support sugarcane cultivation.
