10 Most Vulnerable Species of Wild India

An animal species is called vulnerable due to loss of habitat, destruction and facing a high risk of declining population in the wild. Vulnerable animal species of wild India includes Nilgiri Marten,Nilgiri Langur,Barasingha,Nicobar Flying Fox,Takin and Wild goat.



Yak is one of the largest species of wild bovid found throughout the Himalaya region of India and well adapted to high altitudes. Wild yaks are among the largest bovids and also the largest native animal in their range.

Nilgiri Marten


Nilgiri Marten is the only species of marten found in India and one of the most rare and amazing wild animal endemic to the Western Ghats of India. It occurs in the hills of the Nilgiris and parts of southern Kodagu.

Marbled Cat


Marbled Cat is one of the small wild cat species listed as vulnerable, found along the Himalayan foothills in India. The marbled cat is famous for its arboreal lifestyle and its prey includes birds, squirrels,rodents and reptiles.

Nilgiri Langur


Nilgiri Langur found only in the Nilgiri Hills of the Western Ghats in South India,This species of lutung vulnerable due to deforestation and poaching. Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park of Tamil Nadu is one of the best place to spot the vulnerable Nilgiri Langur.

Clouded Leopard


The magnificent Clouded Leopard is smallest of all the big cats found in India, found inhabiting the dense tropical jungles of north east India. Clouded Leopard is state animal of Meghalaya but classified as Vulnerable because of habitat loss due,deforestation, illegal trading.

Sloth Bear


Sloth Bear species found wild within the Indian Subcontinent but this species is listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss and poaching. Indian Sloth Bear is one of the three species of bears found in India,Himalayan Black Bear and Brown Bear being the other two.



Barasingha is a large deer also called as swamp deer,feed on grasses and aquatic plants. Swamp deer is the state animal of Madhya Pradesh and mostly found in the Kanha National Park.

Smooth-coated otters occur throughout much of the Indian Subcontinent, mostly found in rivers,wetlands and seasonal swamps. Becaue of the loss of wetland habitats,reduction in prey and due to poaching, Smooth coated otter has been categorised as vulnerable species in India.
