Top 5 Highest Population of Leopard in India by State

There are 13874 Leopards in India and state of Madhya Pradesh is home to the largest population of leopards in India followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka. The leopard is one of the most beautiful spotted big cat in India, along with snow leopard and clouded leopard.

Madhya Pradesh (3,907)

As per the 2022 census, Madhya Pradesh is home to the largest population of leopards in the country. Panna and Satpura tiger reserve of Madhya Pradesh house the highest leopard population in India and the same zone has also witnessed growth in tiger population in Madhya Pradesh.

Maharashtra (1,985)

The state of Maharashtra house the second largest population of leopards in India after Madhya Pradesh. Melghat tiger reserve is home to the highest density of leopards in the state followed by Tadoba, Navegaon, Nagzira and Pench national park.

Karnataka (1,879)

Karnataka state records third highest leopard population in India after Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The state is well known for 100 of leopards and the well-known black panther in Kabini, Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best place to spot leopards in India.

Tamil Nadu (1,070)

Tamil Nadu records an increase in leopard population with good density in all the tiger reserves. Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve and Anamalai Tiger Reserve house the top three among the five tiger reserves of Tamil Nadu with highest number of leopards.

Rajasthan (721)

The 2022 census identified 721 leopards in Rajasthan, Sariska tiger reserve of Rajasthan house the highest density of leopards in India, followed by Jawai and Bera. The granite hills of Jawai is home to 50 leopards and the leopard safari in Bera offers a unique experience.

Central India and Eastern Ghats has the highest population of leopards however Odisha, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Telangana and Chhattisgarh states reported a decline in leopard population.
