Top 5 Millets Producing States In India

Today India is the largest producer of millets in the world, under cultivation of millets in 2021-22 is 15.48 million hectares. There are 10 major varieties of millets grown in India and the top five millet producing states are Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh followed by five more millets growing states are Gujarat, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and Kerala.

Rajasthan- 27%

Rajasthan state of India is the currently the largest producer of all types of millets grown in India, The major millets are pearl millets and jowar millets.

Maharashtra- 15 %

Millet in Maharashtra offer diverse kinds of millets, one of the most popular millets is finger millets known as Nachani in marathi along with pearl millets used to make bhakri.

Uttar Pradesh- 14%

Uttar Pradesh promoting the production of millets in the state, currently the major grains produced in the state are rice, wheat, maize and different types of millets.

Karnataka- 13%

Karnataka has developed a brand for millets called siridhanya and has had been producing ragi (finger millet), navane (foxtail millet), saame (little millet), haraka (Kodo millet).

Madhya Pradesh – 8-10%

In MP – Dindori, Mandla, Umaria, Shahdol, Betul and Chhindwara are the leading millet cultivating regions

Major varieties of millets produced in India are Pearl Millet, Sorghum millet, Finger Millet, Foxtail millet, Kodo millet, Barnyard millet, Proso millet, Little Millet and other Pseudo Millets like Buckwheat and Amaranth.
