9 Proposed Reservoirs and Mega Dams of India

Proposed big dams of India include the world’s tallest concrete gravity dam known as Dibang Dam in Arunachal Pradesh,Bursar Hydroelectric Project in Kishtwar,Second Siruvani Dam, dam across the Cauvery river at Mekedatu and Mahanadi Godavari Link with Manibhadra Dam on river Mahanadi in Odisha.

Dibang Dam

Dibang Dam is proposed and planned concrete gravity dam and will be India’s largest dam and the tallest concrete gravity dam in the world standing 288 metres in the Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh. The Dibang Dam in the Lower Dibang Valley will provide up to 3,000 megawatts of hydroelectric power.

Kalpasar Project

Kalpasar Project will be the World’s largest man made fresh water reservoir in the sea and the huge fresh water reservoir will be used for irrigation, drinking and industrial purposes. The Kalpasar Dam Project will also have 10 lane road link over the dam to connect Saurashtra and South Gujarat.

Icchampally Project

Icchampally Dam Project is a multi purpose project on the river Godavari in Karimnagar district of Telangana. This dam project with hydro electricity generation, irrigation and flood control will be joint project of Telangana, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh states.

Tipaimukh Dam

Tipaimukh Dam on the river Barak is a hydroelectric power generation project in Manipur state of North East India. The dam is a embankment dam to control flood and power generation but there is controversy between India and Bangladesh.

Tlawng Dam

Tlawng Dam on the Tlawng river in Mizoram state is a proposed rock fill dam. Bairabi Dam,Tlawng Dam and Tipaimukh Dam are 3 proposed dam in the state of Mizoram in India.

Kishau Dam

Kishau Dam project site is located at the border of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The proposed gravity dam on Tons river will be used for power generation and downstream water supply.

Pakal Dul Dam

Pakal Dul Dam Project on the Marusadar river is a proposed concrete face rock fill dam in Kishtwar district. The purpose of Pakal Dul Dam is for power generation and reservoir water supply to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Mekedatu Dam

Mekedatu Dam project across river Cauvery near Mekedatu in Kanakapura taluk of Karnataka will be used for drinking water needs of seven districts around the area.

Manibhadra Dam

Mahanadi Godavari Link project includes the proposed Manibhadra dam on river Mahanadi in Odisha,Barmul dam and canals from river Godavari. The proposed interlinking of the Mahanadi with the Godavari will have reservoirs and canal power house.

Under Construction Subansiri Lower Dam

Subansiri Lower Dam is an under construction gravity dam across the Subansiri river at the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The run of the river project is the largest hydroelectric project in India and expected to be complete in 2018. This concrete gravity dam will be used for power generation or irrigation and will have eight horse shoe shaped head race tunnels.
